Clemency at the Capri

Following in the footsteps of Just Mercy, Clemency is an also-inspired-by-real-events film about our flawed legal system. Except instead of an upstanding lawyer trying to get save people on death row, Bernadette oversee their executions. Her job is beginning to take its toll as she becomes more distant from her husband and even herself. But she doesn’t want to lose herself to this work. She wants to fight to reclaim her soul.
Time is running out to do so. The next inmate scheduled for execution is Anthony Woods, a young man hoping for clemency from the governor for a crime he claims he didn’t commit. As his lawyer keeps working on the case and announcing his findings, many other people are coming to believe in Anthony’s innocence, too. But will belief be enough to save Anthony?
An acting and directing powerhouse, Clemency was overlooked by the awards this season. But if Clemency is anything to go by, you’ll be hearing more from Chinonye Chukwu in time. As for the actors, Clemency may be one of their best unsung films.
